“A naked work of great strength and interpretative freshness”.José Carlos Sorribes, El Periódico de Catalunya
Let's speak of tourism, shall we? Surely there's no better time than now to
question the validity of a country that consists of sun, sand and sea. This
is precisely what the company José y sus hermanas sets out to do in their
new show Explore el jardín de los Cárpatos (Explore the Garden of
the Carpathians) that makes its Madrid premiere in November at the Autumn
Festival.
This young company has already staged two creations with an especially
original format and a decidedly acerbic tone. The first was Los bancos regalan sandwicheras y chorizos or Banks Award Sandwich
Toasters and Sausages (2017), a political cabaret that look backs at
Franco's dictatorship through the eyes of those who were not born then but
who have inherited the legacy of those years. Soon after, they turned their
gaze to the Spanish educational system in Arma de Construcción Masiva or Weapon of Mass Construction (2019).
Now, with Explore the Garden of the Carpathians, they take on mass
tourism and the systems that have permitted the laying waste of landscapes
under blocks of holiday apartments with total impunity, or the direction of
Brand Spain and how it has shaped our identity from Franco's times until
today. Will we be able to reinvent travel and tourism? This is the question
asked by José y sus hermanas in a show that once again begins with an
exhaustive revision of documentation and continues by developing a series
of “stage bites” that are the basis of the company's work.
In this new show, the Catalan troupe explores the concepts of truth and
fiction by using a multidisciplinary language that ranges from the artists’
bodies to music, video and text, in a hybrid staging vehicle where reality
and the digital world are more intertwined than ever, thus contributing to
a different narrative on tourism. Many people have collaborated in its
creation, including the Chilean stage director Marco Layera and the
audiovisual artist Albert Capó, among others. The members of the company
have also held meetings with different individuals related to the world of
culture and modern society such as the philosopher Jorge Luis Marzo, the
activist Santi Araña, and members of the board of directors of Creuers de
Barcelona.
This is the presentation of a company whose main goal is to invite
audiences to adopt a fresh perspective on how new relations may be built
with regard to the topics explored in their shows, always reaching beyond
caricature or mere condemnation.
